Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration in Canada

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the widely celebrated festivals in India and people of every religion, cast and creed celebrate this festival without differences. The festival goes till 10 days and as per Hindu calendar it is celebrated in August or September.

As per myths, Ganesh Chaturthi celebration was being started as a public event by the founder of the Maratha Dynasty Shivaji (1630-1680) in Pune. On the other hand, with the purpose of bringing people together Lokmanya Tilak transformed this domestic festival into a well-organized and widely celebrated festival in 1893.

However Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over India, the states such as Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are the major states where it is rejoiced with great zeal. As Indians exist in every corner of the globe, it is now a globally recognized festival. So, there are numerous countries, besides India, where you can celebrate this carnival of love, glee, colors and festive dishes. Overseas countries such as Canada, Australia, Singapore, Mauritius, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, USA, UK and Fiji celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi and governments of few above mentioned countries have declared a public holiday for that day.

Toronto, the capital of Canada, where Indians reside in reasonable numbers, Indians get Ganesha Idol from their respective home in India. Besides being millions miles away from India, they are still intact with their culture and continue to follow conventional rituals of Ganesh Chaturthi. With limited resources available, the celebrations in Canada are prearranged by numerous Marathi associations exist in Toronto and Vancouver. They make this event grand by arranging get together, installing Ganesha Idol, singing Aarti, distributing Prasad and by organizing cultural and religious programs.

The Ganesh Chaturthi celebration is organized with the faith that the Lord Ganesha will offer his blessing and bring good fortune and prosperity to his devotees. The festival is supposed as a special event for performers, artists, creative persons and businessmen. Promising artists get opportunity to demonstrate their art work and talent during this festival.
